10. Earthwork Jim
Earthworm Jim is a side scrolling platform game where you control a character called “Jim” who is actually a worm with cool combat capabilities. Armed with a gun, Jim has to go through several worlds, each with a unique huge boss battle at the end.
What is makes this game really stand out from other typical 2D run and gun games is the fluid animation of the in game characters. In addition to using his gun, Jim can also attack his enemies using his head. The original version of the game was launched on the Sega Genesis back in 1994 and then it was ported over to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System a couple of months afterwards.
9. F-Zero
Launched on the SNES platform in 1990, F-Zero is a futuristic racing game which effectively leveraged the graphics processing capability of the SNES hardware platform.
In addition to racing over vehicles on a closed track to see who can cross the finish line first, there are other tasks that are designed to make gameplay more interesting. For example, there are a series of road hazards like land mines that you have to avoid and the driving physics also requires rapid hand-eye co-ordination which makes this game fun to play and that is why it makes today’s Best SNES Games Of All Times List.
8. Star Fox
Star Fox pushed the graphics processing capabilities of the SNES to new levels because the game was in 3D and it used an accelerated 3D game engine to render the graphics. Thanks to the additional processing power of a built in math co-processor chip located in the SNES game cartridge, the 3D gaming experience of Star Fox on the SNES was achieved.
Star Fox came out first on the SNES platform in 1993. It was a futuristic space shooter game where the character, called Star Fox was actually a Fox, who piloted the ship. Star Fox 2 was debuted recently in 2017 on the SNES Mini platform.
7. Final Fantasy III
Final Fantasy III is another popular game title that definitely has to make the Best SNES Games list. It was launched on the SNES for the North American market in 1994. From a worldwide perspective Final Fantasy III was actually Final Fantasy VI when you factor in the Japanese versions of the game.
This is an RPG – most commonly known as a role playing game – where the objective of the game is to defeat and overcome the reign of a dictator. There is a selection of playable characters which you can choose from and the game is played in a fantasy setting with a blend of industrial technologies.
6. Super Metroid
If you have a soft spot for side scrolling action games then Super Metroid may be right up your alley. It was initially launched in Japan in 1994.
The SNES version is a continuation of the original Metroid story line which was on the Nintendo GameBoy a little earlier, called Metroid 2. In the game you control a character called Samas Aran who is searching for a child Metroid who was kidnapped by Space Pirates and their last known location was on a planet called Zebes.
5. Final Fight
Ok, so I must admit that I have a true soft spot for side scrolling brawlers and if there is one other brawler that I absolutely love next to the ever popular Double Dragon, it is Final Fight. This is such a great game so we agreed that it should be part of the SNES Best Games Of All Time list.
I must have lost about 6 months worth or my lunch money feeding quarters into the Final Fight arcade machines after school. Anyway, enough with the reminiscing, Final Fight was originally release in the arcades ihe same year the the Nintendo GameBoy was born, and that was back in 1989. It then was ported on the SNES Home console in Japan in 1990 and then it eventually was available in US SNES home consoles in 1991.
The SNES had three characters that you could choose from, including the giant Haggar who was the mayor of the city. The objective of the game was to rescue the mayor’s kidnapped daughter. There are several levels, including the slums, subway and many others.
4. Super Mario Kart
Mario fans will remember when Super Mario Kart came out on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System back in 1992 in both the Japanese and United States markets and it was the first in a long line of Super Mario Kart game versions which exist today on the ever popular Nintendo Switch game console which was recently released in 2017.
Anyone familiar with Mario, Luigi and the cast of characters synonymous with the Mario Brother’s worlds would recognise characters like Toad, The Princess and Yoshi which are all characters that you can play in the closed circuit go kart races.
What makes Super Mario Kart such a great game is the fact that there is a lot more to do than just race around closed circuits hoping to win. There are various weapons that you can pick up while racing like heat seeking red tortoise shells and slippery bananas which can be used to temporarily slow down your racing opponents.
3. The Legend of Zelda
Ok, so now we are in the top three of the Best SNES Games Of All Time list, as we introduce The Legend of Zelda. This game gives you so much to do during game play. For example, in addition to the traditional action and adventure as you travel through the various worlds, there are elements of puzzle solving, and battle game play. The objective of the game follows a similar pattern in most the Zelda games that have been created. In short, you play the character of Link who has to rescue Princess Zelda from the clutches of the evil Ganon.
This fantasy action game was originally launched in Japan and it is mainly found on the Nintendo hardware platform.
The first installment of the game came out in 1986 and it has been so successful that the latest installment called The Legend of Zelda – Breath of the Wild was released on the Nintendo Switch in 2017.
2. Super Mario World
After such a successful launch of the original Mario Brothers on the NES platform back in the Eighties it made sense to continue the Mario franchise on the more powerful SNES platform in the early Nineties.
The gameplay follows the same storyline as its predecessor and that is to assist Mario in saving poor Princess Toadstool from the evil clutches of Bowser and his henchmen. In addition to playing as Mario there is also an option to play as Luigi.

Donkey Kong has been around from back in the days of the ever famous Game and Watch portable gaming consoles. When it came out on the SNES in 1994 it stood out from many a game in this 16-bit category mainly because of the fact that 3D sprites were used which gave the game a more enriched game play experience which was revolutionary in the 16-bit gaming world at the time.
Play as either Donkey Kong or his little buddy, Diddy Kong as they attempt to get back all of their bananas from King K. Rool and his accomplices.
