Those of you who missed the launch of the original NES Classic Edition that happened back in December of 2016 would remember how quickly those units disappeared into thin air. They were literally sold out in days and to this day if you still want to get your hands on one you would have to shell out 3 or even 4 times its original selling price.
Well, have no fear folks because now there are many imitation variants of the NES Classic Edition out in the market today. That being said, this review is of one of those imitation units which comes very close to the real thing – for a fraction of the cost.
This imitation NES Classic System comes in a very nice box, with a large and clear picture of what is inside on the cover. When taken out of the box you will be surprised at the build quality and the look and feel of this system. I mean, it looks very much like the original and it even comes with the same short wired NES style controllers, just like on the original system.
There is a power switch as well as a reset button on the front of the unit and the back of the unit has a port for the power supply as well as the video out port to a television set.
I must say that I was kind of impressed with the look and feel and even the quality of the imitation NES controllers. The colour scheme, the button layout as well as the feel of the buttons is very close to the real thing.
When the system is switched on you are greeted with menu showing all 620 games that are ready to play right out of the box. Anyone familiar with playing the NES games from the nineties will notice that these games are pretty much the same ones with some minor differences here and there. All in all though the 8-Bit Nintendo gaming experience is there and for a fraction of the cost of the original licensed version.
