In this blog post I want to talk about the subject of Playstation 1 emulation on the recently launched GPD XD Android portable game system. The GPD XD is a very powerful little device capable of playing high quality graphics Android games as well as being a standard touch screen tablet and a great platform for you to run your day to day Android applications. But to be honest, if you are an avid gamer like me who has a soft spot for old-school titles that came out on consoles like the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), SNES, Neo Geo, Playstation 1 and so forth then the GPD XD is definitely for you because it is designed especially for game emulation. That being said, in this post I wanted to talk about Sony Playstation 1 emulation on the GPD XD.
If you go to the Google Play Store and search for Playstation 1 emulators you will find a decent library of Android applications that can emulate this popular hardware platform pretty well. My personal favourite is an application called “epse” which does a very good job of emulating all of my Playstation games which I have had the pleasure of buying and collecting over the years.
In order to get your original Playstation game CDs into ROM files for use on the GPD XD is a relatively easy task as there are various applications online that will enable you to backup your precious Playsation 1 titles to a hard drive in ROM format. Getting back to the epse application, once you have downloaded it from the Google Play store you simply run the application and it will automatically scan your external SD memory card for Playstation 1 roms and present you with a list of all of the games that were found along with box cover art, which I found was a great time saver. There is also a settings tab inside the application where you can configure and map the physical controls of the GPD XD to that of the Playstation emulator.
What is great about modern game systems like the GPD XD is the fact that the buttons (including the layout) are very similar to modern day game systems like the Playstation 1. In fact there are so many buttons on the GPD XD that you will never run out of available physical buttons when running the various hardware emulators or playing regular Android games.
One other feature that I would like to mention are the screen settings where you can keep the original 4:3 aspect ratio of games if you want to be that nostalgic and relive playing games on those good old fashioned CRT television sets or you can go the other extreme and have the game take up the entire 5 inch screen so you can see every aspect of the game and be truly immersed in the gameplay. If you would like to get your hands on a GPD XD game system you can get them here at Gearbest. You can also check out my YouTube video below where I demonstrate some PlayStation 1 emulation games on this cute little system. Enjoy.
